book review: The carpet people, Truckers...
Reviews
The Carpet People by Terry Pratchett.
This book was read many days ago.. And I remembered that I forgot to write the review here.
Apparently, this book has 2 authors. Both of them the same man. Pratchett first wrote this book when he was 17 and edited it at 43. Anyhow, the Carpet people, I find it to be really slow. It didn't catch my attention like how his other books do. It took me so long to finish the book because I prefer doing other stuff like chasing after my cat and the gardening than read the book. But since I can't live with myself if I didn't finish a book I have started, finally, The Carpet People is over and done with.
This is book is about the tiny people living amongst the hairs of the carpets. They build a civilisation and had an order of things.. Everyone follows the order except a nomad tribe called the Munrungs, another civilisation called the Deftmenes, a superior group of people who has lived through the past, present and future called Writs and of course the bad guys [there is always the bad guys..] called the Mouls who try to take over the carpet. oh and not forgetting a natural phenomenon called Fray. I think Fray happens when a human walks over the carpet cos the hairs get bent and the civilisation crumbles.
It revolves around the Munrung tribe's leader Glurk and his brother Snirbil. They were first attacked by the mouls on snargs [a creature that resembles a horse or a cow.] after they experienced the Fray. To save themselves, they packed up their stuff and moved to better pastures. But it seems that the invasion of mouls were deadlier as it seems that the whole carpet was affected.
In the end, the whole carpet united as one force and defeated the mouls with the help of Pones, a long necked, no limbs, winged blob of a creature and a Thunrog, a much superior writ who can change the destiny of events compared to the writs..
So there.. a fairy tale ending with much blood and gore..
Review:
Truckers by Terry Pratchett
Truckers, Diggers and Wings are a trilogy about 4 inch high people called Nomes. This book written primarily for the young adults, caught my attention since the first page. Its amazing that Pratchett made a very detailed story about how a person would feel and think to be illiterate and 4 inches tall.. The elements that they have to brave and how a truck sounds like to someone who isn't used to it all. Masklin, Grimma and the old people had to escape their hole by the diner in search of a better place to be thus Masklin lead the adventure by hitchiking a truck. They went with the clothes on their back, Masklin's spear, loads of string and a black cube called Thing. Thing has been passed down from generation to generation and thought of as the omnipotent power that they worship. What is suspicious is that only old Torrit, the present leader of the small group, could hear what the Thing says. The journey in the truck ended when it parked in the garage of the Arnold Bros Store (est in 1905). It is here that they bump into other nomes where another bigger adventure begun. The Store nomes live with lots of food that they steal from the supermarket, electricity where their days are always bright and departments as they were more than two thousand of them. The Store nomes adopt their names from the floorboards they live under such as the Ironmongeri, Haberdasheri, Del Icatessen and Stationeri. Since they have lived under the floorboards ever since the Store was built, they didn't believe in anything that was Outside such as the weather, trees and grass and especially nomes from the outside. Coincidently, near electricity, the Thing has come to life and the little group, while overcoming the fear of a talking Thing, found out that they were from outerspace. So this little cube found out that the store was to be demolished in a few days time and told Masklin to get out of the store.. Being the good natured nome that he is, he decided to save the population of the Store nomes even though they hated Outsiders. So like the many adventure stories out there, they stole a truck, steered it with strings attached to the steering wheel and ended up out of town a few km away in a quarry leaving behind the store that eventually blew and burnt down due to the security guard's lighted cigarette butt which fell on some spilled diesel.
I just find that books written for the young adults have a fairytale happy ending. I just have to read the other 2 books to justify this theory. In the meantime, I'm reading Diggers and have Wings in my posession.
