Nite Out with Daddy & Bibir

Mood: Estatic and Loved

I went down to NAFA yesterday for an opening exhibition and also to surprise my ex school mates. How I miss them so.. I met with Izh,W.nie and Sar first who were slacking behind the school. So I got to catch up on their lives a bit. Things have changed indeed..
The 2nd year Dip in Fine Arts (DFA) and Dip in Art Teaching (DAT) held an exhibition called Roses & Unicorns: Facts and Myths of South East Asia. It presented some worthy pieces with one of my favourite done by KakD from DAT. Its this small cube with a tiny bubble in side. I wonder how she managed to do that but.. its my fav.

I met with some happy people like Bibir, Metalliz, Nafsi, Gazzy, Dezzo, Rat and Sallie. They were kinda surprised I came.. but I love the attention.. ahakz. After that, slacked at 'kedai kopi blakang' and I had my dinner with Bibir, Sar and Izh while waiting for the opening scheduled at 1830hrs. There, we were joined by Sury, Hidy, W.nie, W.nie's sis and Aiz. Reminsicing the days long past, updating stories of Thy Menjengz and jus chilling. I saw Azh, Fitr and Fadz. They seem unstressed. Hot days like that, I don't mind treating a group of people some iced Milo, iced Horlicks, Kopi peng, Iced Lemon Tea and Iced Barley...

Hehehahah but the best part is meeting my Beyonce.. Immy. You look great honey.. I asked him to join the opening for while with a buffet of ChinChao, malay cakes, jellies and cream puffs. And I met even more ppl like KakD, Sallie, Shen, AzhB, R.man, Sabby, AzL, Hong, Mcle and basically the rest of the participating artists.. The ChinChao is blah but the works and the artist RawKs.

Well Done my Fellow Artists. Kudos to Roses and Unicorns..

That done, I skipped my class [its abt Erik Erikkson and i have done my research on him. so im prepared] and I went to the SAM with Izh and looked at some good erotic exhibits.. But my favourite is the one by Rizman Putra [his is not erotic, mind you. Stop thinking abt erotic stuff already] called 'Where do u see yourself in 10 yrs time?' I simply love it. In fact I love his whole exhibition like the pink silky cloth, the giant rokok gulung and the Mysterious Box. I want to meet him in person one day.. and just sit down and talk about photography and music. hmm... hehehe

All the while, I told Izh abt what I have been doing these past few months and what has happened.. The stories didn't even end after the walk thru CityLink ant at the Esplanade. But when it did, we were sitting by the Outdoor Theatre listening to Walk on Water, quiet but light hearted. I love you Izh, U always make me smile. And since it was a hot night and the jazz wasn't as good, we headed to the foyer and sat under some beautiful green acrylic jigsaw pieces.. [I like the concept.. Might add it to the plans of my new upcoming bedroom] Bibir joined us and we had a few laughs abt the crushes in NAFA. hehe Bibir, Bibir.. tak sangka dikau...

WAHAHAhHAHAKZ!!! *Evil Laughter still Echos...*

hehe I miss hanging out with you guys. Eating at Syam's Corner or the kedai kopi blakang.. hehe Or jus slacking behind the school talking crap and taking uncensored pics...


Till I meet you guys again, I miss u AL, Thy Menjengz, the ex president of AL and the minority race of NAFA..

A Month



For a month we were together
without my knowledge.
That someone and I

I never knew he would come
thus I never expected him to leave.
He depended on me to live

That night we met
was meant to be a Fool's joke.
A once in a million chance.

Psycho Kids

Sigmund Freud is a dirty old man..
We were introduce to the Pschoanalytic Theories of Child Development. He thinks that negative nurturing of a child could lead to a psycological trauma that may cause the child to lose some physical functions..
Here come the 'dirty part':

And there are also the Freudian Defense Mechanism : Repressions; Projection, Reaction Formation, Displacement, Acting Out, Intellectualization and Sublimation.
This is where we had a share story session. One of the girls related this incident where one of the children at her centre would run and slam himself against the mirror or the wall when he thinks that he have done something wrong. He self inflicts himself and plays with his feaces and calls all the teachers with my classmates name. Now that is scary. Just think about it, you work in a childcare and you have to nurture psycho kids. Norman Bates wannabe? Lets pray not..

Changi Beach

Mood: Slow and Easy

Mr DJ asked me out to Changi today to hang loose. He needs a break and so do I after a hectic week. We chose Changi cos its nearest.. heh. I packed a lunch of egg and potato sandwich, Oreos and 2 bottles of water [the last 2 were bought at the supermarket]. The place was super windy and close to the lapping clear green waves and all I can think of is Mauritius. Serene.

So we pitched the tent, tied the hammock, lay the groundsheet and just chilled. I love these moments where I read my book lying on my stomach with the wind blowing through my hair. Mr DJ smoked his rolled cigarette in his hammock, swinging and humming one of his songs. I nearly slept a few times with my book stuck at page 81. The sun hiding behind the casuarina trees did wonders for the snooze on a sunny day. I felt so refreshed even without a swim in the surf..

Mr DJ took some pics with his unfriendly digi camera and I tried my hand at it but I prefer my Nikon D70 anytime. I miss photo taking outings.. [padahal baru jek pergi 2 hari lepas..]

So after the chill out, we headed to Changi Village for dinner and I suggested a new place called Kebab Station. I thought it would sell stuff I'd find at Al Majlis but I was wrong. Firstly, they didn't sell Karkadeh [Hibiscus Tea], the Hummus had Chilli sauce in it [wtf? thats jus wrong!], the mint sauce used dried mint so it wasn't authentic, they drizzle way too much chilli sauce over everything [who does that on rice and lamb kebabs?] and lastly, the owner served us some Baklava on the house cos I think we looked like serious food lovers, just to have a taste of it. Bad idea... the Baklava was not crispy, too oily and the pistacios were already stale. The only thing that reached my expectation was the cool iced tea and the Tabasco Sauce.. My first there will be my last too.

Thanks Mr DJ for the day. Lotsa minty fun. Al Majlis next for some real Baklava ok?

My class today was pretty fun. Noelle kept calling us 'girls' which kinda excited the mums [see: the rest of the class except me] cos they say, 'Its been a long time someone calls us girls.. So happy!!' hahhaha.. So simple to make an old lady smile.. ahakz.. Pardon me. I didn't know we had so much theories to learn about child development. And Charles Darwin was among them. I can't believe Mr Ape Man made it into the list of my readings. I have always disagreed with his theories and I still do. I mean, come on...

Another Sundays...

Mood: Parenthood never was this tiring..

I had the kids over since yesterday cos they were in Tampines while their dad played soccer at my ex sec school. They actually called me up and asked if I could fetch them.. Hehe, I could never say no to them. I ended up spoiling them with ice cream because the weather have been so hot lately. [I've been in white cotton ladies' shirts and beach pants everywhere I go these past few days.] Anyways, they had their shower and I brought them out for dinner at Downtown East. They behaved pretty well around me. And Darwish kept flagging taxis down. He said he was tired of walking WHILE he was in my arms.

He now knows how to trick me by merely displaying his cheeky face.. [Its in Album 1 called Sunday Mornings]. You would never say no to that. hahahaha.

He and Atul finished their Nasi Lemak from S.K Connection at Downtown East and disturbed me with their hugs and kisses. I don't understand why they have to fight over me. I feel like the One Ring.. Then their Dad called to allow them to sleep over, they were overjoyed, I was tired.

I sent them straight to bed. She in her pyjamas, he in the bumble bee bunny pyjamas. I gave them 6 pillows and guess what, he preferred snuggling in my arms. awww.. sweet kan? But I had one tiring night. He had nightmares throughout the night cos he didnt have his comfort pillow. Kept talking abt calling him by his name and crying. AND during the day they fight, even during sleep, they were punching and kicking each other. haiz...

Then today, they scratched each other in the face, left a scar and thats all before 8am. What am i gonna do? So I made them breakfast, played with them for awhile, bathed them and got them ready to my grandma's place where I had to teach. They behaved thoroughly in the bus and the walk to her place and Darwish still kept flagging taxis while he's in my arms. Tsk tsk..

After much frustrations, screams, science lessons and National Geographic breaks, their Dad, my uncle, fetched us for dinner at Changi, sent me home where I collapsed among 6 pillows and an airconditioned room, exhausted...

Anthr Field Camp, Anthr Interest...

Mood: Calm and serene...

I jus had my class. It was awesome. All those ladies there, are very fun to hang out with even tho they are way older than me. I've formed my group and they are Yati, Constance and Nora who laughs our stress away during breaks. Apparently, I am the youngest in the class again and one of the 3 who aren't married with children yet.

Fadh has another field camp with recruits from polys and Os.. I survived the last field camp, I'll surely survive this one too.. All those rushed phonecalls before he showers and telling me how the recruits were. But this time round, he has an added interest which is photography. I must say that his skills have improved. I might just introduce him to my first love, Nikon F2. But poor him. he's already deprieved of sleep during ns, it seems he has not been sleeping well recently either. Feels so bad that u are soo tired. Rest well ya..

And...

I read in the papers about the scholar who wrote about some rascist remarks, it made me think abt blogs. What are blogs used for? I use it to write my thoughts abt the day that I lead, to share my photos and to write my poems...
I read some who use it to write abt their innermost feelings.. some wrote abt their evil deeds and plans.. those poor souls..

I had a talk abt minds with fadh. some we agree are corrupted.
some are plain weird. some jus share a connection with another.
but isnt it interesting to find out how minds work..
Sometimes I can hear ppl's thoughts..
they are so noisy sometimes.
some are out of this world.
some are penned in diaries..
some are kept in blogs.

what makes a mind tick.
memories are worth a whole lot more than the world
so is ur dignity...

Paperclip Tree

Mood: Aching Body

Unlike most tuition days, today I didn't hand out assessment books and mock test papers for them to do.. Instead, we had project day. I had planned to execute some Science Experiments for the eldest so she can further understand the wonder of nature. In the end, all 4 joined in for the hands-on experience. Since the eldest, Zafirah, didn't fully grasp the mechanics of observation, classification and analysis, I let her embark on an experience of her own.

First off, I helped her understand the difference between living and non-living things by planting some green beans, a piece of wood and a paperclip. I was asking her what she would expect at the end of 4 weeks.. She said, the green bean would sprout some leaves and grow, the wood might grow some mushrooms and the paperclip will jus get rusty..

Excellent.. [thats when I saw she had her science guide book open to the results]

And the funny thing is that her younger brother contended that analysis.. He said that the paperclip would also grow to become a paperclip tree.. It would sprout paperclip leaves and flower paperclips too. He proudly asks, 'Where do you think paperclips comes from?'

To make him quieten down and not influence the youngest sis with this theory, I told him, he would have to grow bread mould. He got excited and ask me what to get..

I ask for:
1 piece of bread,
half a glass of water,
and some foil.

I get:
half a bread [ the other half in his mouth]
a tiny bit of water [for his thirst after the snack of bread]
and a whole lot of foil..

Iron out Creases


Mood: All ironed out. [see tired]

I've been doing some heavy ironing these past few days. Moving mountains of laundry from my room. Finally, after 3 continuous days of chain ironing, the mountain has been reduced to a heap of 4 pieces of clothing that needs mending first. (apparently, their owners have an addiction to doing the splits.) Some might ask, 'Why did you take so long to do the ironing?', well, the answer is simple. Coming from a family of 6 adults who thinks that ironing just the piece they want to wear for that day, is sufficient to erase any sight of the growing mountain of laundry at the corner of the room. So for the last 2 months, I've been living with blind, ignorant, lazy adults.

Since the folding and the sorting and the ironing has been done, I have this feeling of achievement. I really feel happy and calm. I have never thought that ironing clothes can be so therapeutic. Spraying starch 15cm from the piece of crumpled clothing, ironing the creases out and watching it end up smooth and crisp. After the 30th shirt, it kinda gets addictive, this thing called starch ironing. You'll feel like grabbing anything, jus to see it end up smoothed out and crisp. Methaphorically speaking, I wish I can iron out my problems as easy as this..

Being sensitive is me,

Feminism in Islam

On March 18, 2005 Amina Wadud led the first female-led Jumu`ah Prayer.
On that day, women took a huge step towards being more like men. But, did we come closer to actualizing our God-given liberation?

Well, answering your question, I can say that I don't think so.

What we so often forget is that God has honored women by giving them value in relation to God-not in relation to men. But as Western feminism erases God from the scene, there is no standard left but men. As a result, the Western feminist is forced to find her value in relation to a man. And in so doing, she has accepted a faulty assumption. She has accepted that man is the standard, and thus a woman can never be a full human being until she becomes just like a man-the standard.

When a man cut his hair short, she wanted to cut her hair short. When a man joined the army, he wanted to join the army, and so on. She wanted these things for no other reason than because the "standard" had it. What she didn't recognize was that God dignifies both men and women in their distinctiveness, not their sameness. And on March 18, Muslim women made the very same mistake.

For 1,400 years, there has been a consensus of scholars that men are to lead Prayer. As a Muslim woman, why does this matter? The one who leads Prayer is not spiritually superior in any way. Something is not better just because a man does it. And leading Prayer is not better just because it is leading.
Had it been the role of women or had it been more divine, why wouldn't the Prophet have asked Lady `A'ishah or Lady Khadijah, or Lady Fatimah-the greatest women of all time-to lead? These women were promised heaven and yet they never led Prayer.

But now, for the first time in 1,400 years, we look at a man leading Prayer and we think, "That's not fair." We think so, although God has given no special privilege to the one who leads. The imam is no higher in the eyes of God than the one who prays behind. On the other hand, only a woman can be a mother. And the Creator has given special privilege to a mother. The Prophet taught us that heaven lies at the feet of mothers. But no matter what a man does, he can never be a mother. So why is that not unfair?

When asked who is most deserving of our kind treatment? The Prophet replied "your mother" three times before saying "your father" only once. Isn't that sexist? No matter what a man does, he will never be able to have the status of a mother.

And yet even when God honors us with something uniquely feminine, we are too busy trying to find our worth in reference to men, to value it or even notice it. We too have accepted men as the standard; so anything uniquely feminine is, by definition, inferior. Being sensitive is an insult, becoming a mother is a degradation. In the battle between stoic rationality (considered masculine) and selfless compassion (considered feminine), rationality reigns supreme.

As soon as we accept that everything a man has and does is better, all that follows is just a knee jerk reaction: if men have it, we want it too. If men pray in the front rows, we assume this is better, so we want to pray in the front rows too. If men lead Prayer, we assume the imam is closer to God, so we want to lead Prayer too. Somewhere along the line, we've accepted the notion that having a position of worldly leadership is some indication of one's position with God.

A Muslim woman does not need to degrade herself in this way. She has God as a standard. She has God to give her value; she doesn't need a man here.

In fact, in our crusade to follow men, we, as women, never even stopped to examine the possibility that what we have is better for us. In some cases, we even gave up what was higher only to be like men.

Fifty years ago, we saw men leaving the home to work in factories. We were mothers. And yet, we saw men doing it, so we wanted to do it too. Somehow, we considered it women's liberation to abandon the raising of another human being in order to work on a machine. We accepted that working in a factory was superior to raising the foundation of society-just because a man did it.

Then after working, we were expected to be superhuman-the perfect mother, the perfect wife, the perfect homemaker, and have the perfect career. And while there is nothing wrong, by definition, with a woman having a career, we soon came to realize what we had sacrificed by blindly mimicking men. We watched as our children became strangers, and soon recognized the privilege we'd given up.

And so only now-given the choice-women in the West are choosing to stay home to raise their children. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, only 31 percent o f mothers with babies, and 18 percent of mothers with two or more children, are working fulltime. And of those working mothers, a survey conducted by Parenting Magazine in 2000, found that 93 percent of them say they would rather be home with their kids, but are compelled to work due to "financial obligations." These "obligations" are imposed on women by the gender sameness of the modern West and removed from women by the gender distinctiveness of Islam.

It took women in the West almost a century of experimentation to realize a privilege given to Muslim women 1,400 years ago. Given my privilege as a woman, I only degrade myself by trying to be something I'm not, and in all honesty, don't want to be-a man. As women, we will never reach true liberation until we stop trying to mimic men and value the beauty in our own God given distinctiveness.

If given a choice between stoic justice and compassion, I choose compassion.
And if given a choice between worldly leadership and heaven at my feet, I choose heaven.

Book Review: Diggers and Wings

Diggers and Wings by Terry Pratchett

Diggers is the sequel to Truckers which I have read a few weeks back. Apparently, compared to the discworld series, there is nothing much that I can quote. The story went long and direct and jus not as imaginative. Just like walking on an expressway, all you see are cars speeding past.

You know what, crap it.

Diggers and Wings are written for the young adults and they should stay as books for young adults. I thoroughly enjoyed and loved The Wee Free Men but not this. It is as tasteless as paper. In fact, Double A paper has much to taste then these trilogy. I seriously enjoy reading about the Pope's Funeral than reading the 2 books. There were much more activity abt the catholics that kinda pushed the barriers and ran towards the cathedral jus to see the body of Pope John Paul II then what is written about the nomes flying back to space.

So there.

The trilogy is out of my system.

Im so full with hunger...

Mood: hungwy

i have been stuffing myself with apples and fishballs the whole of today. There is not much to cook at home, the place is forever in a mess, and i hate my cats now more than ever.

Please contact me if u wish to adopt a gay cat or a naughty cat. i have both.

My eyes stings and I have no idea why. My stomach is grumbling. My tagboard is made for myopic ppl. I am hungry. My shoulders hurts. I want a massage. The only good thing about right now is I watching a beautiful sunset from my window.

Somebody please take me away to my own personal island of white sands and turqouise clear waters, a rustic beach house with a sun roof above the bed, a garden littered with hamocks and swings and white cotton curtained gazebos filled with cushions of many sizes and the most beautiful sunsets and sunrise the eyes have ever seen. Mood: Ecstatic

This whole week, I have been up to my nose with this feeling of lonliness.. Ask Fadh, Mr DJ and ludwig.. I can't believe I ranted it all out on them. you poor things. I jus hate it.. but oh well.. jus have to get on with life and like what someone always says, 'Bersabar aje..'
Being a tutor has its ups and downs.. especially the downs. Some people treat me like their own personal tutor, expecting me to be on standby 24/7.

WHAT THE HELL!! I have a life you know. A LIFE!
I don't go around waiting for u! Its bad enough that I'm feeling lonely, you are just making use of me. I had enough of this. I don't care if your mum was good to me. If u don't have the effort to make urself a better person, I won't be there for u no more.

*takes a deep breath*

Right.. I have contented myself by doing good deeds such as teach young children how to read and understand that there are more to vocabulary then what you can find in Nursery Rhymes. I have also balanced out my karma by threatening them with a cane for the patience they wore out on me. And today, all went well since, I got my pay.. [at last] and jeng jeng jeng...

Sarah's BBQ

Mood: High on Takoyaki...

The MENDAKI career talk went well. I actually enjoyed it, having another door of opportunity open up when one was slammed shut in my face. The fact that there were so many aspiring pre-school teachers, some with an attitude, some who have retired and some who are as enthusiastic such as me.. I qualified for the Dip straight away and I signed up for it. I'm thankful that this came where its affordable and the bright side is that if im good enough, I might end up in Vietnam.
I'm just so ready to start anew.. meet new ppl and stuff
anyways, next stop is Costa Sands East Coast for Sarah's BBQ Chalet. I didn't know how much I miss all of them till i got there. Esp Sarah..
But initially, I really felt out of place cos I didnt know the people there. Fadh and I were on our own.. but once Khidir came, we were pretty much okay.. Khidir, you're a lifesaver man... We started making our own Takoyaki and it was a blast. I think I had 9 too many. *Burp*

Free Chalet Stay @ Aloha Downtown

Mood: Tired but refreshed

2 weeks back, there was a advertisment in the New Paper about NTUC giving free rooms at the newly renovated DownTown East. Aisam, being the bummer waiting for school to start, he actually queued up for a room. And thanks to him, he invited the whole family and a few others for the one night stay. In the end only Fadh and Hayqal came other than the immediate family. The rest couldn't come down due to other commitments.
We had planned to have a BBQ and a Movie Marathon.. But we just had to make do with a movie marathon cos firstly, there weren't much people. Secondly, it was raining.

Chalet Menu:

20 Satay babat [I have no idea what this is in english. someone said 'flabs' but that sounds inedible]
40 Satay kambing [mutton]
40 Satay lembu [beef]
5 packets of nasi lemak
2 packets of sambal lontong
4 bottles of soft drinks
6 thai coconuts

There was a notice stating that the water would be cut from 1am to 5am on the 1st of April. We laughed it off as an April Fool's joke but it wasn't. Oh the agony of having a stomache in the middle of the night. We had lotsa fun watching Kung Fu hustle for the 5th time. Steven Chow is a genius I say..

Speaking of which.. I had even better fun watching someone have an entire conversation about magic and lightnings with some recruits while the someone is actually SLEEPING!! wahahahahhahahahhahahahahhahahahahha Classic.

In the morning, we had Mac Breakfast. the cheapest one so far.. A Sausage Mc Muffin with Tea at $2. Bargain Galore!! Proceeded back home for breakfast, emails, friendsters and finally a well deserved rest.

Tmr, i'll be going to a Mendaki Career Talk and Sarah's BBQ chalet at East Coast.
